He only heard half of Veronica's reply, his attention focussed on the picture Veronica slid over the table towards him. His hand was unsteady as he touched a finger to the figure on the photograph. She was older than he remembered, but it was her.
A rare smile broke up and the next thing he knew, he was up and around the table and kissing Veronica. Yeah, it surprised him too as he pulled back startled and trying desperately not to blush as she smirked at him.

He couldn't ever pretend to understand her decision, but he knew what it was like to feel isolated. He also knew that she was the only one to realise just what he was going back to.
In the end, neither of them had any words. They meditated together for the last time and when the time had come, Zuko rose to his feet. Marie followed close behind and he turned when he reached the door. He had a destiny to fulfil. Not the one his father had laid out for him, but the one Zuko decided for himself.
Reaching up, Zuko rested a hand on her cheek. It was the first time he ever touched her and it surprised him when she closed her eyes against the tears. It surprised him when he leaned down, brushing his lips over hers or when she kissed him back. It was sweet and gentle and nothing in Zuko's life was like that. Nothing probably would be again as he pulled away and slipped out of the door.
