Damn, now the Netherlands voted against the European constitution. This is stupid. We need to unify, Europe needs to grow stronger and t his constitution would be a good thing. If UK says no to it too, we're frakked. Europe will receive a huge blow and go backward, not forward. There is no back up plan if we don't agree to this. Mistakes can still be corrected, but we'd have a common ground to start from. Argh!

Yes for some countries the constitution is the way forward but what doesn't seem to be considered is that it might not be the way forward for all of Europe.

Date: 2005-06-01 07:25 pm (UTC)to be honest, there should have been a back up plan , the big dudes shouldnt have been so ignorant to think they can rule Europe without getting any resistance from its people.

Date: 2005-06-01 08:56 pm (UTC)This is going to be one huge string of gross generalisations, but here's my theory:
We feel threatened by our immigrant neighbours because they did not integrate into our society. Instead of fitting in, they desperately clung to their own culture and now form a quite seperate group that's only part of our society in a small way.
Because of this, our country is loosing its national identity, the 'native' people feel they're loosing their national identity. Because, if half the people in a country are of a different religious persuasion, and have very different, almost irreconcilable cultural habits, that collide with the religion and culture that were originally in a country, what =is= the national identity?
And in comes Europe, with it's new and unifying constitution. Uniting all these different countries, making them one.. well, metaphorically speaking anyway.. cos Europe becoming one? With the French and the Germans and the Brits? Never in a million years.
But still, just the idea of "making Europe one" is terrifying for a country that feels like it's lost its national identity..
So they vote no.. and put the EU back 20 years.. and ensure that the US will be the biggest world power for a long long time..
And that's =really= scary.. and one of many reasons why I voted yes..
Sorry about the rant.. I think I may have to link to it on my own LJ ;-)

Date: 2005-06-02 10:51 am (UTC)Europe is a good thing, in my eyes. It is a good balance against US, something that is just starting to happen. Look at the war in Iraq, give Europe some time and if everyone would stand together we might actually be able to form a decisive "no".
Heh, rant away. Although, I don't really feel like going into an exstensive debate about it. I just think that a lot of people are saying no for all the wrong reasons and it saddens me.

Date: 2005-06-02 12:42 pm (UTC)I believe that because we're all so aware of our national identity, we will never loos it.
The EU constitution doesn't say that we have to give up our monarchy, it doens't force its member states to become republics with conservative/liberal/whatever governments..
So I don't believe the constitution is a threat to our 'national identity'
And yes, it would be so nice if the EU got a little bit more united and would be able to stand up against the US. It would be so healthy for the balance of power in the world.

I don't want an extensive debate either. There's no solution.
But yes, all those people saying no for the wrong reasons saddens me too..
