My mom always insists hers is mousy brown, but I think it's too rich.
Can't really give you a celebrity-type visual, because anyone on TV or in the movies who naturally has "mousy" hair is going to at least have warm-toned highlights in it.
As you might already be gathering from the comments, it's not really a precise color. More an implication that the person being described is, well, nondescript. It's sort of the brown equivalent of "dishwater blond," which is also not precise/specific.
I can't believe I've never thought of her before - not that I actively ponder Tonk's appearance, she's just kinda there in my head - because Keeley rocks. But she definitely strikes me as a good possibility :)
I always think Mousey-brown as a sort of lank dark blonde, too dark to be blonde but too light to be brown. A sort of not!colour. Hehe.
I think Keeley Hawes looks like how I imagine Tonks to grow up and look like. In my mind she's only about 20/21 and looks younger. *shrugs* If she did play Tonks though I wouldn't be upset!
Hrm, I agree that she is a bit too old for Tonks. However, I think Tonks is older than 20/21. How long did auror training take again? Four to five years? Which would make her 22 at least. Okay, one year older. Err... *looks sheepish*
Hrm, I think she's a decent actress and could do it. And yes, she can definitely angst. She's cool in Tipping the Velvet. Not sure about the clumsy, but err... she could fake it!
Top left small pic is mousy before dying it henna. Although I tend to think of mousy brown as being a bit lighter- basically no natural highlights or body. Straight color and flat.
