Need some info about the Stargate movie

1. As far as I can gather Daniel was supposed to translate the stone covering the Stargate. Before he did that, did the government already know what the gate would do? Did they have no clue at all what they were dealing with? What did Catherine tell Daniel (the gist of it) when she asked for his help.

2. How many time passed between Daniel deciphering the text and the away mission? Was there some time in between for them to set up the dialing program?

ETA: 3. Did Catherine call it the stargate already or was that something Daniel found in the translations?

Anyone can help me out here? Please?

2. The dialing program was already in place. They just couldn't figure out the 7th symbol. Of course, they didn't tell poor Danny that.

Catherine basically asks if Jackson would like to prove his theories correct and asked him what did he have to lose? He was homeless, grantless, jobless...
Once there, she showed him the cover stone, said they'd found it on the Giza plain in 1928. The government already knew what it did because they'd already recalled Jack in case Jackson was successful.

It took Daniel two weeks to figure out the symbols were constellations. They held a briefing the same day. They immediately showed him the device and he instantly found the seventh symbol on it. They sent a probe through minutes later. The away mission happened very soon after because Danile assured them he would be able to translate the symbols on the other side and bring them back home. I would say within 48 hours at most.

Daniel did discover the word Stargate in his translations of the inner track of the coverstone, but whether or not they already knew to call it that was not disclosed.

The device was the Stargate (until that moment he had been unaware of its existance). Sorry about the confusion on that.

3) Until Daniel correctly translated the coverstones, the word 'stargate' had been translated 'door to heaven.' Although I never heard the device referred to as the Door to Heaven, it's possible that is what it was called.

But Catherine only started calling it the stargate after Daniel's translation of the coverstones.
