Need some info about the Stargate movie

woodface1. As far as I can gather Daniel was supposed to translate the stone covering the Stargate. Before he did that, did the government already know what the gate would do? Did they have no clue at all what they were dealing with? What did Catherine tell Daniel (the gist of it) when she asked for his help.
2. How many time passed between Daniel deciphering the text and the away mission? Was there some time in between for them to set up the dialing program?
ETA: 3. Did Catherine call it the stargate already or was that something Daniel found in the translations?
Anyone can help me out here? Please?
