Misty died, they had to put him to sleep. Apparently he had an infectious disease that he's been carrying around for years most likely. The belly fills up with water (which explains the weight gain), once it starts getting infected there's pretty much nothing you can do and he would have been in too much pain to let him go through it.

*fires today and goes hide somewhere*
