End of an era
Nov. 8th, 2006 01:25 pmBah. My first years of university I spent at a smaller uni in Brussels. A catholic university that only taught the candidate years and was a way to lift some pressure off of the bigger catholic university in Leuven. In time, the university developped and built up quite a decent reputation. There are some esteemed professors there that deserve some huge credit in the lowlands. It came to stand alone against the french university and the state university. And despite its limitations to the humain sciences, it bugged a lot of people. It's been a thorn in their sides and for years now the government has tried to shut it down, has tried to make it work along with the state university, something that it refused to do as they didn't want to lose their identity.
Looks like after years of struggling and fighting for their existance, they're finally on the slippery slope. A few years ago, they started cooperating with a college. The result was that the other school was sharing the building with them. I went back there a couple of times as one of my promotors for my thesis was a professor there and it was just different. The whole atmosphere from when I was a student there was completely gone. Now, they're forcing them to drop three of their programs that they're offering. Amongst which history, which I followed there.
It's sad. This university holds a special place in my heart and they're screwing it over. They've been trying to for years, but they kept themselves standing and now they have to make this sacrifice. Now they have to let their students down and say 'we're sorry, but you'll have to go elsewhere, you can't finish here'. The students are protesting tomorrow, they're going to take over the university. I doubt it's going to do much.
