Disclaimer: Not mine, but am considering buying it.
Rating: PG
Spoilers/set: Throughout Memento Mori. It won't make sense unless you saw the episode.
Category: Vala/Cameron & Vala/Daniel
Summary: OMG, it's too short for that.

A/N: Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] daisycm83 for the beta. She described this as pining Cam which is apparently quite sweet. Then again, I think anything he does is sweet. Any suggestions for a title are welcomed.

---

When Daniel informs him of the dinner he’ll be having with Vala that evening, Cameron doesn’t protest. He doesn’t point out that she’s been through enough, that Daniel finally needs to give her some ground or be honest. Instead, Cameron just nods and says he’ll pay the bail if the date ends in jail.

He spends his evening in the bar down the road nursing a bottle of lukewarm beer until he’s called into the SGC because Vala’s gone missing.

During the next two weeks, he spends his time pouring over mission reports all bringing up nothing. It’s like she ran out of the compound and disappeared into thin air. When the report comes in that the identification process of the bodies is going to take a while, he tries not to think.

Daniel’s been holed up in his office for days now, dealing with books on an ancient treasure and Cameron doesn’t blame him because that’s what Daniel does best. It’s when Daniel barely remembers to get into contact with Harper, when Daniel tells him how he never lost hope, that Cameron nearly loses it because he’s been drowning in reality and he’s failed his team again.

It doesn’t matter that he’s the one who ends up pantless and cuffed to a bed and it’s still Daniel who triggers her memory. He just smiles because she’s back and he makes damn well sure that she’s officially his responsibility.

He puts the patch on her jacket, lets himself feel the heat of her skin through her sleeve for just a second – until she reminds Daniel of the date they were having and all Cameron can do is walk out of the room.

He spends the rest of the evening trying not to remember the faint brush of her fingers on his skin as she picked up the dog tag to read his name, wondering why she can’t read him like that too.
