Stargate and fandom

mrv3000's post has made me think a bit. Stargate was my first online fandom and it's probably my only one. I've seen pretty much all corners of its insanity and believe me, that was more than enough. It feels like this cancelation is the last phase of fandom I hadn't been through yet and my experience is now round so I don't need to repeat it for any other shows.
I watched this show since the very first day it aired on belgian television. I watched it faithfully, but never heard about such a thing as fandom until I started exploring the online world. It was more the people and the fanfic that drew me in than the actual show. Mostly because I was two seasons behind on everyone. This was during S6, Daniel was gone and everyone was squeeing over Jonas. I started writing, I got an lj, I met a lot of people who are currently on my flist. It was a good few years with wank, drama and squeeing and meeting new people.
Then S8 came around and I started losing interest in the show. RDA wasn't bothering at acting and I just couldn't enjoy the series the way I used to. Even now, it's all a blur in my mind. I didn't see the point of a S9. I just wanted it to end when it wasn't too bad.
When S9 came on, I decided to give it a shot. Maybe because I finally got introduced to Farscape and I did enjoy Ben Browder. So let's see how he'd do? I didn't fall in love with the season right away. I did fall in love with Cameron Mitchell and Vala. The characters won me over. They brought a new dynamic and a new enthusiasm to a show where the older actors were having trouble still being excited out. I fell in love with the new characters and I fell in love again with my show. It's not the same show, you can't really compare it but it was something I was looking forward to again.
With S10 it was like everyone was finally starting to fit in. The writers were slowly getting their act together as they seemed to have found a purpose and the team was starting to gel. I'm excited about this season. I'm excited about the number of people who started tuning in despite never having seen the seasons before. I really felt like there was a new breath of fresh air in the fandom and in the show.
It's rough to see that getting shut down. Not unexpected, but just... rough. I wanted to see where the new characters were heading. Yes, most of my disappointment is for them because Teal'c, Sam and Daniel had their stories already. Cameron and Vala were just getting theirs. And yet, for the first time since S5? I was starting to maybe like Daniel again. Which... wow... miracle. In a way, I am not really raging and ranting like I see most people do. I'm not inclined to sign a petition even if I'm hoping this won't be the exact end. The story isn't over and I'm sad that for once that the writers are thinking ahead of themselves, they get shot down. Strangely enough, I'm pretty accepting. It's been 10 years and that's a long time for a show. It was good.
The thing that however does make me cranky are the fans. No, not the ones that are putting up petitions or who are flailing around or maybe even creating wank. It's the ones who haven't given a frak about the show since S8 because RDA left and they couldn't bother to stick around to keep watching and now that the show is being canceled they go 'good'. Yes, it annoys me. I loved S9 and I'm loving S10. I stuck through the bad episodes and found that I was enjoying the good ones *a lot* and having people go all petty because they only watched for one person is... annoying. The 'now you know what it feels like' stuff? Also very annoying.
I'm going to miss Stargate. I'm going to miss the characters. All of them. (Possibly Cameron the most.)
