So how would one make screencaps from an avi file?

I watch the .avi files in Power DVD and use the capture button (has a camera symbol on it). That's the only way I know, anyway :)

[livejournal.com profile] boofadil pointed me to bsplayer which has screen capture functionality and most useful has a free version.

Another cool thing is you can slow down the video playback by 10% increments which is helpful for capping and has the added value of being hilarious to listen to.
