Classification: angst
Summary: She preferred ending relationships with a bang.

A/N: Huge big thanks to [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat and [livejournal.com profile] lyssie for the beta. Let's pretend I'm actually a prolific writer.

It was the third day in a row since the funeral that Lee Adama had shown up at her apartment. He only briefly glanced at the paint she threw at the wall in a drunken haze last night and then moved towards her kitchen.

Resigned to what was coming, Kara plopped down on the couch and propped her feet up on the littered coffee table, making the empty bottles clang together. The Aerilon ale was Zak’s; she didn’t think he’d mind that she got pissed on it last night.

She finally turned her attention to Lee, but he didn’t appear to need her involvement in the conversation he started the minute he'd walked in the door. She knew what he was saying.

Every time he blamed his father for the death of his brother, she wanted to get up and hit him. She didn’t. Listening to Lee rage was the least she deserved. She snorted to herself. Even when he was ‘raging’, Lee was in total control. His tone might be louder than usual, but he still clipped his words as if they’d get out of hand and lead a life of their own if he left them uncontrolled.

He had reached the part of his monologue where he accused his father of pushing them both into becoming viper pilots. She stared out the window at the parking lot while she wondered if Lee was born in his neatly pressed uniform. If only she’d had the heart to suggest that Zak become an ECO instead, he’d be fine now. That thought popped up unbidden and she lunged to her feet, snatching the one still-filled bottle of ale from the table and stalking across the room to dump it in the garbage sack that was propped up against the wall.

“Are you listening to me?” Apparently Lee did want her participation in the conversation after all.

“I listened to you yesterday and the day before, Lee,” she said tiredly as she tied the garbage sack closed.

He didn’t answer and she didn’t turn around to face him. She’d lost her lover, Lee had lost his brother, but he failed to see that Adama was losing both his sons. “The old man offered me a position on the Galactica.”

“What?”

Kara finally turned towards him and shrugged. “He offered me a position on the Galactica.”

Lee stared at her. “I thought you liked teaching at the Academy.”

She shrugged and moved back to the couch. “I resigned yesterday.”

“Why?” He followed her and sat down on the edge of the armchair.

“Because.”

“That’s not an answer,” he snapped back as if it were a personal insult.

“It’s the only one you’re going to get.” She sank back into the couch and closed her eyes. It was so much easier to talk to Lee when she didn’t have to actually look at him. Maybe because she had the feeling that anyone would be able to easily read the lies from her face.

“Are you going to take it?” There’s a sliver of accusation in his tone and it only served to fuel her determination.

“Yes, I think I will.”

Kara didn’t open her eyes as she could hear the rustling of clothes as Lee got up from the armchair. His footsteps were heavy as he climbed the iron stair and she was disappointed when he closed the door with a dull click. She preferred ending relationships with a bang.

Very interesting story. I loved Lee ranting, Kara not listening, and that this was already a routine.
Loved Zak's beer.

I want to go "Awww, Kara!" and then hug her, and then I think "But Awww, Lee!" and he wouldn't punch me for trying to hug him, and then I just think "Awww!" and hug them both.

Ooo, very nice! That's just like Lee to go off ranting in his own world, while Kara stews in hers. And of course, their relationship isn't ending, so the door closing with a click is prophetic in its way. ;-)
