I don't think I can give a wel thought out opinion on the book yet. I just sobbed through the last chapter. I'm kinda not bummed about Harry breaking up again with Ginny, if he survives, he'll go back to her. And omg, Tonks finally beat some sense into Lupin. Still, I want Dumbledore back.

I was on another lj and someone mentioned that Sirius found a locket in the Black's cupboard. Could R.A.B be Regulus Black?

I was on another lj and someone mentioned that Sirius found a locket in the Black's cupboard.

Yep, it's on page 108 of Order of the Phoenix:

"There was a musical box that emitted a faintly sinister, tinkling tune when wound, and they all found themselves becoming curiously weak and sleepy, until Ginny had the sense to slam the lid shut; a heavy locket that none of them could open; a number of ancient seals; and, in a dusty box, an Order of Merlin, First Class, that had been awarded to Sirius's grandfather for 'services to the Ministry'."

JKR has a way of bringing incidental characters back later on -- when Hagrid mentioned borrowing Sirius Black's motorbike in Philosopher's Stone, I don't think any of us figured on him ending up so integral two books later. And I know I didn't expect that batty Mrs. Figg would end up being a member of the Order! And not only have we been introduced to Regulus's name, but we've also learned quite a bit about him just from page 104 of OotP: that he joined the Death Eaters, and that something caused him to have second thoughts and try to leave. (Come to think of it, most of the names mentioned on the Black family tapestry end up figuring into the story, don't they?)

In conclusion, no, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's Regulus. Though I certainly wouldn't put it past JKR to pull a new one on us, either . . .

I'm using Merrin just to show off my icon :)

In Chapter 6 of Ootp, Serius says "he was murdered by Voldemort. Or on his orders, more likely, I doubt Regulus was ever important enough to be killed by Voldemort in person."

I get the idea that Regulus was underestimated by Serius, but the real question was whether he was understimated by Voldemort.

A lot of people are theorizing that Regulus was actually killed while trying to destroy the locket. Makes sense, when you take DD's withered hand into account.

Yeah, when reading Rowling, I'm not dumb enough to say, "I know such and such is going to happen." ;D

Or that Voldemort had him killed because he realized what had happened, but by then it was too late, and the locket was already safe somewhere else.

That's true.

I love how she reuses details and characters.

Speaking of which, you realize we've seen the Sectumsempra spell in use before, in OotP. I don't have my copy at hand right now, but in the "Snape's Worst Memory" chapter, it's the spell that Snape uses on James after the humiliating incident with the Levicorpus spell . . . another spell we learned from the margins of the Half-Blood Prince's book.

I do so love things like that. I'm currently re-reading all the previous books and looking out for details. *glee*

Huh, I don't remember seeing the Sectumsempra spell in that chapter (not by name, at least), but it did remind me of the silent spell that hit Hermione in the Dept of Mysteries (when she silenced that Death Eater with another spell).

That was exactly what I was going to say. It was a purple streak that sliced right through her, although it took a lot more to heal her than to heal Malfoy later. That could be because it was only Harry's first time using it, and he didn't know what it would do -- he didn't have enough intent behind it. I keep meaning to go back and reread to see if she tells us what color the spell is, because I don't think she actually does.

Yes, I remember when Harry tried to use Cruciatus against Bellatrix in OotP, she said that he needed to really want to cause harm to a person in order for the curse to be effective.

But no, the color of the spell isn't mentioned with Hermione.

Tonks finally beat some sense into Lupin.

omg! I soooooo wanted to spoil you! Esp. when I read you post about "someone give Tonks some Remus love."

I love, love, love that scene!

The general buzz seems to be that R.A.B. is Regulus, and in the interview, signs pointed heavily to Regulus.

Awww, I was really happy about Remus and Tonks too - although I gather that too is an "unpopular fannish opinion."

I cried at Dumbledore's funeral scenes, but mostly because of everyone else's grief - it's weird because although someone has died the end of the last three books, the one that broke me up the most was Cedric's death in Goblet of Fire. It was the first death for Harry; he was a really good kid; and he was, after all, a kid and not a grownup who'd made some bad choices (Sirius) or a very elderly wizard (Dumbledore).

I think it has to do with Cedric being a kid. Dumbledore and Sirius had their lives and while it is sad, they went down fighting the good fight. Cedric's death was senseless.

Yeah, I think Cedric was the emblem of the collateral damage - he didn't choose the fight, although he acquitted himself heroically. AND it's the first time we see someone who's good killed by Voldemort (I also felt terribly sorry for the poor old caretaker of the Riddle house at the beginning of Goblet.) And I'm pretty sorry for poor Merope Gaunt as well :(
