FANFIC AUTHORS APPRECIATION WEEK
Mar. 7th, 2005 02:59 pmMarch 6 through March 13
Post to your LJ each day at least one of your favorite fanfic authors and why you love them, their work, and why they need more appreciation.
I decided to do two authors every day. That still means that I won't be able to handle all my favourite fanfic writers, but I do think it gives a nice insight in what I consider to be the best authors in SG fandom. I was wondering where to start with this so I decided to just go to the beginning.
So here's the ones for Sunday:
The first author that i read was
josephides so it seems only natural to being with her. I know she wrote a while back how her interest in SG waned but her fics remains some of the best out there.
I simply love Jojo's writing style. She makes it seem so simple. Her stories have a natural flow in it, no matter what the subject. She plays with her characters as if she knows them like the back of her hand. Most of Jojo's fics are humourous and light. She manages to bring the cutest fluff while keeping Sam and Jack perfectly in character. Jojo fic makes me happy. It always leaves me with a smile and a warm fuzzy feeling. There is nothing quite like her fic and sometimes I do miss her writing.
I was overlooking her fic list (quite a long one and I'm thinking that I should reread some of these) and these were the fics that mostly stuck in my mind. They're just my personal favourites though, every single one of her fics is a pure gem. Tuneless is Sam and Jack holding hands in the dark. Do I need to say more? Two in One is Sam and Jack in an escape put. This fic is hot and funny at the same time. And no, she didn't give in and make turn it into smut. I'm not sure if I admire or hate her for it. A matter of tact series is a nice Jack retires fic and deals with the hassles of them dating (and so much more). Bright ideas, you just have to read it and then you'll see. Conversing with Cliffs some nice action, angst and tension. And what shipper doesn't love the last image she leaves us with? My personal favourite has to be Speechless though. It's an AU fic that just... leaves you speechless. This fic kicks ass big time.
I don't think I have said nearly enough to describe what makes Jojo such a good author. I don't think I have the right words for it and I never was good at explaining why I like something. She was the first author I read and her fic sucked me into SG fandom.
The second author I read was Sally Reeve. Her writing is a whole lot different from Jojo's. Sally writes longer fics. I fondly remember discovering her writing through Jojo's site and thinking that I hit a goldmine. These are the fics you read after a long day of work. You sit down at your computer, pull a blanket up to your shoulder and just read for hours.
Sally writes long fics and tends to post them in one go so you can sit down and let yourself get sucked in by the plot. It's easy to tell that she puts a lot of work in her fics. Not merely by its size, but her plots are well thought of and while these are all full out romance fics, they are a pure pleasure to read. She has an eye for detail and her prose is wonderful. While sometimes the characterisation isn't always 100%, you gladly overlook it because these fics are simply GOOD. There is plot, there is romance and how can a shipper not love these?
I think my favourite Sally Reeve fics must be A second chance and Moving on. Similar plot devices, but they work. Like
nhawk78 told me, there is nothing quite like the scene where Sam finds a drunk Jack hidden in the hotel where Sara's wedding reception is.
I think any shipper in Sg fandom simply must read these two authors. There is no way you can avoid these two.
