ten unpopular opinions about fandom meme

lytarules so here's mine. In no particular order and with possible S7 spoilers.
1. I don't want a S9. I believe that there is something such as "too much of a good thing". I much rather have the show would stop now while I still enjoy it. The possibility of RDA not being in the show really isn't helping here. (See why in the next point).
2. I watch for ship. Well, that's not entirely true but it is one of my main reasons why I enjoy SG. I have always been a sucker for ship and will always continue to be. I don't need ship to enjoy an episode but my pain drive for watching is ship. Hence why S9 would not appeal to me if RDA would not be in it.
3. UST is better than RST. RST bores me. Example; I loved Paris/B'Elanna when they were bickering and not yet together. I got bored when they got married and got a kid. UST is great and amazing, it keeps me on the tip of my seat and makes me want to watch and see where it goes. Angst is great, rejection is great, the touches and glances are thrilling. An established relationship gets boring to watch (and read, don't like established relationship fics). Gimme UST, bitch! But despite everything, I still want to see them together at the end. Not in an overly sappy way but just something to hold on to and make my shippy heart happy.
4. Sam is the hottest member of SG1. Seriously, not Jack, Daniel or Teal'c can make me drool like she does. She is *hot*. She has the nicest ass, she is hot, she is gorgeous and so much more. I understand Daniel has a certain prettiness but it's one that never really spoke to me. Too boyish. Teal'c has a nice body but he's too burly for my taste. Jack is the hottest man on the team, hands down. Not babyfaces like Daniel, not muscled like Teal'c. He has a face that shows he has lived, he's just sexy. But Sam? She's gorgeous, she's beautiful and I want her! *g*
5. Someone already said this but: slash is out of character. I can see perhaps Daniel being bi (if I have to). But Jack? No way. Who said it again? It was someone on my flist but it was exactly what I thought. "Jack is one of those guys who has nothing against homosexuality but he damn well wouldn't shower in front of them." He is old fashioned and conservative in a lot of ways and I don't see him being open to homosexuality. I had this discussion with Julie a while ago and she said that perhaps after many years of knowing someone that it would be possible but he wouldn't consider it to be "gay". I disagree. There's just no way in hell.
6. I don't like any of Sam's (would be) boyfriends. I don't like Narim, he's boring and I doubt his little emotion thing had that much feelings in it. Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy and all but seriously? *snores* I don't like Martouf. Never trust a man with light blue eyes. They give me the creeps. His smile gives me the creeps. But he's the lesser evil of all, I guess. I don't like Orlin. Want to call anyone stalker? It's him. Dude, his pacifism made me want to hit him. And boring? Barrett? Oh for crying out loud! He's a cardboard. He's perfect, the nice good guy without a character. Bland. Pete? Let's save that for point 7.
Oh yeah, I also see Barrett as a greater threat to Jack than I do Pete. How strange is that?
7. I don't like Pete, I don't hate Pete. Which puts between two sides. I liked him at the beginning of the episode. He made Sam smile, he was funny. Then he ran the background check. Which showed a lack of respect and trust and he should know better in his line of work. I don't think it makes him an evil person, it was a mistake but saying it's natural for him to be curious is a poor excuse. I think it shows the basis of what will go wrong between them. He knows what Sam does now but she won't be able to tell him everything. It will make him even more suspicious and will, in time, make the relationship suffocating for Sam.
8. I like Anise. When Astor(?) died, she looked so sad. *sighs* I don't like her outfit but I like her. I loved her flirting with Jack and watching him panic. I want her back!
9. I don't like Weir. Maybe this will change when I see Atlantis. I liked blonde Weir. I don't like the Weir in NO. She just wasn't someone I could feel sympathy for. And ship? Sheppard and Sam would make one gorgeous couple. Which brings me to the next point...
10. I don't like different pairings involving persons from my OTP. So yeah, I am being contradicting here but anyway. I'm sorry, I try to be openminded but I just can't. *sighs* It's a loyalty thing. It makes me feel like cheating. I know that's stupid but it's just the way it is.
And two free opinions:
11. I don't like Thor/anyone. Seriously, I'm traumatised here, dudes.
12. I don't hate any character no SG. But I don't like everyone.

I agree with you about Pete, I don't mind him, but he's a bit, I dunno, meh. There's something about him I can't quite put my finger on. I have never liked Martouf, never trusted him and I liked Orlin.
And the slash thing, totally agree. Jack just wouldn't. But then, thats part of what fanfiction and television is about, a complete escape from reality.

You have a setting, your characters are worked out, you have a certain plot line already laid out for you. Just one thing you have to do with writing is staying through to the characters and making them believable. If you even can't do that...

Not strange at all. Barrett is a stronger character (and cuter IMHO) and someone more interesting that would hold Sam's attention instead of suffocating her like you said.
I really agreed with 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 & 10. I even started to not hate Pete as much just because I think he's so lame it's not worthy of such strong emotion. #8 was funny, and I agree that Jack being put off-balance is great to see.
And finally, #9- I liked the 1st Weir a lot, but the 2nd Weir is good, too. Totally different, and I do like the idea of her with Sheppard. As for Shep/Sam, I think he's too young for her ;-)

Date: 2004-09-02 11:06 pm (UTC)While I totally respect this opinion, I also think that, all too often, by the time there is RST (Moonlighting, Remington Steele, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, etc.) the series is usually in a decline and has writing that is less effective. I really wonder what would happen if a show were to attempt RST when the show is still vital and young, when the writers and actors are still energized and invested, and before it's essentially a desperate attempt to boost ratings and restore the interest from earlier in the series.
I wonder what would happen if there were a belief in television producting that married/committed couples were interesting even if they did not begin the series that way. Abbey and Jed Bartlet? Fascinating, dynamic, interesting, hot...and married (of course, they were when the series started). Duncan and Tessa? Delightful, sexy, interesting, dynamic (of course, they were when the series started).
I really believe RST suffers more from timing, writing, tiredness, and a lack of belief in its ability to hold an audience's interest than from it smere existence.

9. I like Weir. I liked her a tad more when Jessica Steen was playing her in TLC...but I'm getting used to Torri Higginson. There's potential for her to be a great character. I think she just needs time.

Indeed, I think that aggravating TPTB will only prove counter productive.
There's potential for her to be a great character. I think she just needs time.
We'll see then, I guess.
