See Bush on tv. Read an article about 9/11 and Bush's attitude. See Rumsfeld on tv. Read an article about the prison in Iraque. See Cannes on tv. Wonder what happened to freedom of speech and softly sing So this is America even if you don't know if it is even a song.

Yeah. Try living here.

All I can do is wait for election season and write letters to my congressmen and give money to the ACLU (which can't/doesn't lobby on some of the more fundamental issues, just ones where civil liberties are threatened, like with the prisoners in Cuba).

We've had bad presidents before, and I know I've always thought, "Well at least I didn't vote for him." This--this is way different.

Impossible to reconcile any of it with how we're taught Americans are supposed to be. And they do teach us, in school. Milk and cookies and patriotism. Maybe Bush just needs to go back to kindergarten, but that won't undo what's been done.

Ok, I'm going to stop now, before I start crying at work.

Well, I've been told Jules and I live in a "liberal enclave..." by both cynical liberals who don't have that luxury, and conservatives who despise our city and its notorious tolerance.

Even so, Bush's numbers are (finally) slipping. His approval rating is going down the tubes. True cynics think that he'll pull bin Laden out of a hat right before the election in an attempt to counter the lack of faith everyone's developing.

Not looking forward to the next few months.

Well, I *like* our system of government. I think the checks and balances generally work. It's just that the president here gained a lot of temporary power after 9/11.

Some day *soon* it will equalize and rebalance. I have hope.

I mean, at this very second. Twenty minutes from now, I'll be back to near-tears. Because I'll be in the car and listening to the news on the war. :(

Last week, I was having lunch with my lovely visiting Hun at one of my favorite cafes. It's sort of loosely attached to a woodworking business (no, it doesn't really make any sense to me either), so you'll often see various products being pimped. On this particular day, every table featured a very nice cutting board with the words:

Save the World! Defeat Bush in 2004!

carved in flowing script near the bottom. Ironically, I had been telling my guest that I really needed a new cutting board, and I couldn't have asked for a better one.
