Demons and angels were born out of the loss of knowledge of the ancient religions. Bene ha elohim, sons of the lord, were probably Canaanite gods, incorrect translations of the Hebrew text to Greek, translated it as "god's angels". The translation then to Latin changed it to filii Israƫl, sons of Israel. Based on Deuteronomium, Greek church fathers believed that every nation stood under the protection of it's own angel.

The passage that intrigues me most is Genesis 6:1-4 though. It tells how the filii Dei noticed how beatiful the human daughters were and each chose a wife. But God said his life spirit wouldn't stay with the humans as they are insignificatn beings and will only live for 120 years. As a result of the mating between his sons and the daughters, giants now lived on earth, the tyrants of the old time.

Hee, good luck!

Thanks, but I'm bad at commenting at the best of times, I think I'll have to just forget about those 160+ posts. :(

How did your exam go?

Hmm, it was harder than I expected and they brought the exam forward in the day, so I didn't get to revise over my lunch break. Eeek. I had to guess on some of the questions. Some of it was okay. I guess we'll see..

Munchkin, I have a text for that icon you were making me!!! "She loses a little each day"

Oh yeah, that icon. Oops ;) Nice text! Will have to work on that tonight.

my favourite piece of trivia in the whole world is on the transliterated version of the first words of genesis, bereshul bara elohim: in the beginning, the gods hacked. none of this 'in the beginning, god made the world'...

funny how things get changed around from language to language...

lol, i figured - i just don't know when the translation problems came in - from Hebrew to Greek? To Latin? From Latin to the vernacular? I've just been reading about the legitimisation of the ENglish version of the Bible during the Renaissance - it was banned for so long!

Interesting. I haven't taken part in a good "sons of God and daughters of men" conversation in a very long time. My favorite piece of fiction on the subject is "Many Waters" by Madeline L'Engle.

I just had to comment about the Hebrew to Greek to Latin thing, though. Some of the modern Bibles have been translated from the Latin, but the KJV was translated directly from the Hebrew. If Rob were skulking around, I'm sure he'd have something to say about that, but IMO it's the best translation.

I believe in angels and demons.
