This image came to me. I don't know if I'll ever that the story anywhere so don't read it if you know you'll want more. It could stand on its own in a way but it should be the start of a cliche fantasy fic. (Not fanfic people!)

“Within a thousand days you will rule this world.” The voice whispered to him, the prospect of power wrapping around him with every blow of the wind.

“Within a thousand days those who are fighting will sink to their knees for you.” Malobreth grinned, the image of his enemies worshipping heating his cold heart.

“Within a thousand days you will be king and your wish shall be the law.” His horse bucked, the hooves rising up the dusty ground.

“Scorch the land.”

The wind rose, making the dust roll down the hill and unto the plains before him. The mountains rising before Malobreth were still a border now but soon the green valleys behind would be his.

“Set fire to their homes.”

The serpent flag would replace the dragon and all who lived under it would bow to him.

“Kill them all who do not obey.”

He would rule with the sword. His will, his law.

“Rule like a king.”

From the ashes of the old kingdom would rise a new one. From the blood that would stain the earth in this battle, new life would be born. And all of it would bow to him.

“My Lord, it is time.” A voice behind him reminded. “Your men are ready to ride.”

Yes, soon it would all be his.

“Then tonight we ride.” He commanded.

“But, Lord. The moon stands clear in the sky. They will see us approaching.”

“They will not.” The wind whispered its promise.

“No, they won’t. Tell the men we will leave now.” Never before had the voice lied to him.

“Yes, my Lord.” The soldier bowed and stepped back.

A smile played upon Malobreth’s lips as he watched the deserted plains before him. The moonlight casting an eerie light on its surface. The man was right, in this clear light they would be seen from miles away.

“Do not doubt me.”

“I do not.” Malobreth answered aloud. The voice always kept to his promises.

“Good.”

Slowly Malobreth watched as the mists rolled down from the mountain and unto the plains. It travelled along steadily, obscuring the plains from his eyes. No one holding watch on the mountain passes would ever see his army approach.

“A thousand days, Malobreth. I will see to it that the land will be yours. But do not forget the prophecy.”

“I will not. There will be no female warrior. I shall forbid the women to bear arms. Thus will be my will, thus will be my law.” The voice had told him his death would come by the hands of a woman. He would see to it that no female would ever hold a sword.

“She will come for you.”

“Let her try. I shall be ready.” He heard his men approach him and turned his horse.

“Ride softly now, the mists will cover us. When daylight comes we will be in the mountains and soon the land will be ours. All its riches will be yours to do with what you please. My kingdom shall be your heaven,” he promised.

“Na-He!” The men cried.

“Then follow me, my brothers.” He tugged the reins and forced his horse down the hillside, its speed rapidly increasing as he heard his men’s horses thundering down the slope behind him.

I think it could make a great story - not only a fanfic if you chose to take it that way, but a great story in its own right. It has a Lord of the Rings tune to it, but that's not a bad thing :)

Sorry! *g* Although, I must admit, that was the first thing that popped into my head. It could work both ways.

Welcome :)

*shakes herself a little*

Not that I want to pressurise you or anything, but you have to write more of this. This has so much scope and you have spraked off so many questions that this could either build up into a looooooong original novel, or a very powerful fan fic.

*reads it again*

I wish things like this would pop into my head!

Why only write fanfic? I love this little fantasy 'intro'! And i'm sure you can make a great story out of it... But you don't have to, of course...
