FANFIC AUTHORS APPRECIATION WEEK
Mar. 8th, 2005 08:23 pmPost to your LJ each day at least one of your favorite fanfic authors and why you love them, their work, and why they need more appreciation.
Tuesday: These authors happen to be amongst my favourite people. I guess that sort of colours my view on their writing but it doesn't change the fact that they kick ass big time.
splash_the_cat is an author that I admire. That has to do probably because I know somewhat how she works, I know how much she ponders and works on her fics. Something I have no patience for, but she has taught me a lot about writing. Julie makes me squee like no other author. There is something about her fics... I'm not sure I have the words for it. She uses a minimum of words and yet manages to convey a whole range of emotions. Her characterisation always rings true and makes her get away with the quirkiest plots. Her humour pieces are light and funny and make me fall in love with Sam and Jack all over again. Her angst tends to tear you up. Although, she does have this stange thing for OT3's and zombies that I will happily ignore or mock her with (depending on my mood).
There are so many Julie!fics I could recommend. She has set herself to such a high standard that they are all little master pieces. Oh well, here is a "short" list of my favourites: Rhapsody in Blue is just awesome. The angst in this... and yet somehow she manages to end with a shimmer of hope. Up the waterspout just proves how well she handles her characters even when I demand silly fics. 101 Fabulous Sex Tips because it's smutty and she wrote it for me! Bottomless, because in my mind this Abyss fic is canon. And what is it with yellow kitchens? Imaginary number because it hurts and this is exaclty how Sam's mind works. Chapel of love is the only Vegas fic that actually works.
I love Julie, I love her fic. Even if she tends to be evil.
stars_like_dust is someone who is very much underappreciated, if you ask me. She has a very own writing style that I think is best described as "understated". She knows exactly what to describe and what to leave hidden to grab your attention. Often, I find myself sucked into a scene by her eye for detail that makes the fic jump up from the page and allows you to be drawn into the character's world.
Claira loves her angst, without a doubt. And she's sickingly good at it, although I think she doesn't fully realise just how good she is. Her first fic set the tone (and yes, I am jealous that she entered fandom with such a bang). My personal favourites are Stains and 72.000. I think these two fics illustrate how powerful Claira's writing is and how she can just show the reader exactly how the character is feeling. Although Claira seems to be proud of her angst writing capabilities, she does a mean fluffy fic too. Fair exchange (Jack in a kilt? No clue how she came up with that idea), Clarity and Noticing are just a few examples of why I love Claira's writing.
Heh, and now she is writing Kara/Lee fic. Just give me a little more time and we'll be getting smut out of her yet! Mark my words!
