Date: 2004-12-01 06:09 pm (UTC)(Btw, Santa is only a recent development. As a kid I never believed in him as he's basically a copy of Saint Nicholas. December 6 is meant for kids and they get presents then. Christmas is a family day with presents from the family only. Maybe Saint Nicholas would be a solution for americans too to keep christmas out of the stores for a while longer.)

Date: 2004-12-01 07:07 pm (UTC)Not just a copy -- when I was a kid, I was told they were the same person. :-) Who put little things in our shoes on St Nicholas eve (that one from my mom's German-American family, even though I'm about the fifth generation here), and brought one bigger present on Christmas.
Maybe Saint Nicholas would be a solution for americans too to keep christmas out of the stores for a while longer.)
If only. They'd just use it as an excuse to start EARLIER, since the actual days falls sooner. And our government would make a law interfering in any way with capitalism, on the basis of what is considered here to be only a religious holiday, and a minor one at that.
The only reason they recognize Christmas is that it was already a cultural tradition, and not just a religious one, by the time we had a government. No other religion-based holiday is a government holiday.
If the stores had just stuck with the darn "after Thanksgiving" tradition, it would be much less annoying. One month, most of us can take.

Date: 2004-12-01 07:10 pm (UTC)See, it's not a holiday here either. No one gets the day off. It's just exciting to be kid. You get candy and toys in the morning. On a school day he will drop by with his servants and it will just be fun. Capitalism will gain from it.

Date: 2004-12-01 07:14 pm (UTC)*chuckle* Blame the Victorians for that one. Not our fault.

Oh, good God/dess, I can just imagine the hullaballoo THAT would produce.
"We can't take away class time for some foreign thing!"
"How DARE you subject my child to a religious figure?!?"
And so on, and so on, and so on...

Date: 2004-12-01 08:33 pm (UTC)Bwahahahaha. Hey, it might satisfy those who think there should be more prayer in school. Besides, it's grown way beyong a religious thing.
Bwah, I just have a huge soft spot for Saint Nicholas. I think any child here has. He gives presents, yo! And he's really kind. One of our belgian celebrities started a show about Saint Nicholas and one of the most famous belgian actors plays the saint. He is just amazing. He is so in character. A few weeks ago we had the official arrival of the saint in Antwerps and the actor was there too. The way he does it is just unbelievable, I'm even convinced he's the one real Saint Nicholas.
Sorry, rambling.

Date: 2004-12-01 08:41 pm (UTC)Well, the ones who wouldn't consider it idolatrous. *wry g* Which is most of them, probably. The conservative activists tend to come from denominations that aren't real keen on saints in general.
And see, all this is the same attachment American kids have to Santa. I'm telling you, same guy. :-D
