[livejournal.com profile] angelfinn asked if I could write her a quick introduction to the characters and the show. So I'm going to try and do this without getting things too complicated. The fact that she has seen the movie should help a bit. *gulps*

The series starts a while after the movie ends. Colonel Jack O'Neill has returned to Earth and has told his superiors that the archeologist/linguist Daniel Jackson has died on Abydos. Jack's attempt to reconcile with his wife fails and the marriage ends in divorce.

Meanwhile the stargate remains in Coloroda Springs but is pretty much useless as they think the other Stargate is broken. That is until Apophis (an alien just like Ra) walks through the stargate, abducts an officer there and leaves. Jack is recalled and has to fess up that he lied and that Daniel is very much alive and happily married with Sha're on Abydos. General Hammond orders Jack to go back to Abydos and to get Daniel and hopefully find the abducted officer.

Hammond assigns Captain Samantha Carter to Jack's team. She's an astrophysicist and way smarter than Jack. (And is a bit of a stereotype in the first few episodes but becomes very lovable later on.) They return to Abydos to find Daniel there but while Daniel shows them something in another temple. He explains that he found a chamber full of symbols and he thinks they're all adresses. So the Stargate can be used to go to different planets all over the galaxy.

While they are there, there is an attack from Apophis and he abducts Sha're and her brother. Luckily they manage to see what planet Apophis took them to and they all quickly return to Earth to get permission to try and rescue them. Which of course they get but they get captured (d'oh).

Quick explanation about what the goa'uld (the aliens) are. They're worm like creatures that take over a body by attaching themselves to brain of their host. The pretty much squash the personality of the host and make them prisoners in their own body. The goa'uld are able to become really old thanks to the sarcophagus (which can also heal wounds and sometimes even revive the dead). The goa'uld have enslaved thousands of worlds and are able to dominate the people by pretending to be gods. Their military power is based on the Jaffa, these are humans but they have a "pouch" in which they carry the larvae of the goa'uld until it is fully grown. The Jaffa are dependent on these larvae as they will die without them.

It appears that Apophis's queen and his children are looking for new hosts. Of course, Sha're and her brother get picked and there is nothing that Jack, Sam or Daniel can do about it. Apophis orders that all the other prisoners get killed. Jack had observed Teal'c, the first prime (the Jaffa leader of Apophis' troops), and noticed that he seemed to have doubts about how godly the goa'uld really are. He manages to convince Teal'c to help them. Teal'c switches sides and helps them escape back to Earth, Jack invites him to come along.

The first episode ends with the formation of SG-1 as the Air Force realises that the goa'uld are a threat to earth. The team (and other teams) will go through the Stargate in the hope of finding technology and allies against the goa'uld. (And of course they want to save Sha're too)

SG-1 will consist of Colonel Jack O'Neill (team leader and snark supplier), Captain Carter (brains of the team who has to fight with techonology), Daniel Jackson (who translates stuff and plays expert on all cultures) and Teal'c (who will remain stoic at all cause and shall defy everyone with his eyebrow).

They pretty much go to different planets, make new friends or enemies. One of their friends are the Asgard (Roswell grey) who are funky and have cool toys. Sadly enough they also have a new enemy called the replicators. These robot bugs live to replicate themselves. They look for advanced cultures, use the technology and iron to make more of themselves and they're pretty unstoppable. In season 6 these replicators make human like androids to lead them. In my fic I mention Fifth, he's one of those androids (the fifth they created). Only he was different, he had feelings and was compassionate. He had a weakness for Sam and tried to help SG-1 escape. Jack didn't think it was wise to have Fifth survive and ordered Sam to lie to Fifth so he would get stuck on the planet as well. In S8 Fifth manages to escape from the planet and gets hold of Sam and tortures her (while Sam was mad at Jack for ordering her to leave Fifth behind). Sorry if this is confusing.

Another important ally to Earth are the Tok'ra. These are pretty much goa'uld who have bettered themselves. They refuse to take unwilling hosts and have a symbiotic relationship instead. They have been fighting for centuries to stop the goa'uld but have been unsuccessful. Add to that that their queen is lost and there are no new Tok'ra being born. Ironically they met the Tok'ra when Sam got taken as host by Jolinar. A bounty hunter was after Jolinar though and she died in Sam's body while trying to save her. On the other side Sam's father, Jacob, was dying of cancer and he became a willing host to the Tok'ra Selmak.

I think these are the really big lines of the series. I will add some notes about the characters now.

Jack O'Neill used to be black ops. He fought in Iraq. On one mission they became surrounded by the enemy and Jack was cut off from the others. Cromwell ordered for the team to leave Jack behind which resulted in four months of hell for Jack. His son Charlie accidently shot himself with Jack's gun. Jack felt guilty for his death and it caused his marriage with Sara to go badly. When the Air Force offered him to go on a suicide mission to Abydos (the movie), Jack took the chance. He didn't get killed but his attempts to save his marriage failed. When he became the leader of SG-1, he sorta started a new life. He's stubborn, constantly making bad jokes and improper remarks but that makes him who he is. One of the most tragic things that happened to him on the show was when he became infected by an ancient virus. It was incurable but the Tok'ra offered him a host to heal him. Jack refused as he hates the Tok'ra but Sam convinced him (by saying "Please" and "Sir") to do it. When he did, however, the Tok'ra took off to try and save a girl he fell in love with on an undercover mission. He got caught though and the Tok'ra left his body and Jack behind to be tortured by teh goa'uld Ba'al. Ba'al pretty much tortured and killed Jack over and over again. Fun! Now in S8, Jack has been promoted to General and is now in command of the Stargate Command instead of General Hammond.

I pretty much said everything about Captain Samantha Carter. She has been promoted twice now; once to Major and recently to Colonel. She is in command of SG1 in Jack's place in S8. She has been whumped badly; has been taken as host by a Tok'ra, been taken by an alien Entity, has had every guy who falls in love with her get killed, been abducted by bad humans on Earth (watch the Jack!angst) and has now recently gotten a boyfriend. She's a great character.

Daniel Jackson hasn't been that very lucky. He keeps getting himself almost killed and in S5 he actually got killed. But a powerful alien helped him ascend to a higher plain. In S6 he was replaced by Jonas Quinn (a very perky and cute alien guy who we all adore and miss deeply). In S7 however, he got his ass kicked back (naked) to our plain of existence and returned to SG-1. He did find Sha're, pregnant with Apophis' child but the goa'uld inside her tried to kill Daniel. Teal'c had to kill Sha're to save Daniel. While Sam's boyfriends seem to die, Daniel'd girlfriends seem to get snaked. Another one of his love interests was taken as host as well by Osiris. In S7 they managed to save her though.

Teal'c has a son and a wife. He has been an inspiration to other Jaffa to rebel against the goa'uld. However, these rebel Jaffa were unable to get goa'uld larvae when the ones they are carrying die. Unable to replace them, these Jaffa have died. Teal'c's wife died this way too. Recently though they have discovered a way for the Jaffa to survive without the goa'uld. In S8 Teal'c doesn't get a promotion but he gets hair.

I think that's it. Okay, not that short. So sorry.
