Today on the news an elderly couple killed themselves in their home. They locked themselves up in the garage while they let the room fill up with exhaust fumes from their car. The woman was suffering from health problems.

Oh my Lord.

How could someone just end their life like that? I'm in utter shock.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the idea of loving someone so much that you chose to die together with them.

I thought about that too. It certainly takes a strong kind of love to do that for one another, which in a way is kind of a thing to be happy about... I guess.

Well I didn't see it as really "bad news". Sure death is never funny but if you have lived your life and you are in constant pain, I think there is a point when you think that you're ready to die. I guess that they talked about euthanasia and that he just didn't want to live on without her.

Yeah. I didn't mean to make it seem bad. I was just shocked at the moment. And I think if that were the case in my life, I'd rather die too than be without my significant other.

I get the shocked part but it kinda touched me. I'm not sure how the US stands on euthanasia but here it is allowed (which I find a good thing).

Bah, I'm probably just trying to see this from a romantic pov. Trying to grasp the idea of sitting down and deciding that you want to die together and not one in a hospital and the other years from now, alone.

No I completely understand your point of view. I can definitely see the bit of romance buried in there.

Maybe if euthanasia were legal here in the U.S. I might have reacted differently at first. Who knows? One can only imagine.

That's sad. I can't imagine at this point in my life that kind of self sacrificing love.

No, I think it's easier to imagine when you have come to a point where you feel that you have lived your life.

You know, it's odd, I can't see myself doing that with my husband, but if my child died, I would kill myself at the earliest opportunity, to hell with the people left behind.

I can understand this, I really can.

This reminds me of a study that Emile Durkheim did on suicide. He came to the conclusion that women did not need men or need to get married. But inside a marriage women needed children.
