The golden water stayed his friend when he finally became a teenager, his father didn’t. He could almost feel his mother’s fingers digging into his upper arm as they saw his dad off in the port. His mother had told him that his dad had been waving back, but he couldn’t make out his father between all those men wearing the same uniform. He tried to ignore the part of him that was convinced he would have seen him if he had been there. So he lied to his mom when he told her he had seen his father waving back. It made the road home a little less longer for her.
